About the verse
True godly courage is a rare and precious
commodity. In all of us is a cringing, craven, doubting coward
who would rather hide than attempt anything great for God.
God’s Spirit will urge you to do things that you would otherwise
never dare. Beware of timidity! Beware of its companion,
fear! If I have a fearful thought, I always need to remind
myself that it never came from God, who only imparts courageous
thoughts.
About the art
A very convoluted bandwork pattern repeats itself
throughout, becoming smaller in scale in the center and wider along
the bottom tier. There are several plant-forms: an orange
bush, ivy, laurel branches, oak leaves and acorns. The oak is
a symbol of strength, which ties in with the verse’s theme of
courage.
